What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

It’s normal for all of us to feel sad, anxious, angry or fearful at times. However, if you notice you or a loved one is experiencing these emotions quickly and frequently, Dialectical Behavior Therapy may be a therapy method that can help you on the journey toward better mental well-being.

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based approach that teaches people how to manage intense emotions.

Dialectical means coming to terms with how two things that seem opposite can both be true. During DBT, a trained Broward Therapists counselor will teach you how to accept your thoughts and emotions, without judgment, while helping you make positive changes through coping skills and strategies that ultimately lead to better mental wellbeing.

What skills are taught in Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy, you will learn four core skills—mindfulness, acceptance and distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

Throughout your sessions, you’ll learn that these tools can be solutions to your problems, or they can help you in finding another way to work through your situation. During DBT, you’ll learn that there is an emphasis on learning how to solve the problems in your life as a way to build better mental well-being.

What sets Dialectical Behavior Therapy apart?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy has a strong focus on emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships, which makes it different than other therapies, including its comparative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Unlike CBT, there’s no reliance on changing one’s thoughts in DBT. Rather, there is an emphasis on balance within one’s life, acceptance and change in DBT.

Who best benefits from Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy was created to help treat Borderline Personality Disorder. However, DBT is now used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, self-harm, ADHD, eating disorders, PTSD, anger management and more.
